Who you work with#
The project would primarily work with small and marginal farmers and other members of the local agricultural community. The team would also interact with agricultural experts, field workers, NGOs or community organizations, and other stakeholders who can provide practical insights into farming-related problems. Where relevant, the project may also consider interactions with agricultural equipment owners, buyers, and other participants involved in the agricultural supply chain. Their feedback will help the team understand actual farmer requirements and ensure that the proposed platform is designed around practical needs rather than only technical assumptions.
The situation#
Farmers make several important decisions throughout the farming cycle, from selecting a suitable crop and preparing the soil to managing weather risks, diseases, harvesting, and selling the produce. However, access to reliable and timely agricultural information is not always easy, particularly for farmers with limited digital literacy or limited access to agricultural advisory services.
What is going wrong#
Farmers may face difficulties in selecting crops according to their soil, climate, season, and local conditions. Unpredictable weather can affect sowing, irrigation, crop growth, and harvesting. Crop diseases and pests can also result in crop losses when they are not identified and managed at an early stage. In addition, farmers may not always have easy access to current information about market prices, demand, potential buyers, or agricultural machinery. These challenges become more difficult when information is available through multiple disconnected sources or is presented in a way that is difficult for farmers to understand and use. As a result, farmers may have difficulty making timely and informed decisions throughout the farming cycle.
Why it is not fixed yet#
Existing agricultural services and digital platforms often address individual needs such as weather information, crop advisory, market prices, or disease identification. The challenge is bringing these different requirements together in a simple, localized, and farmer-friendly system that can support decision-making across multiple stages of farming.
