Who you work with#

We would work directly with local newspaper distributors and vendors who deliver papers on bicycles and scooters during early morning hours, along with newspaper distribution agencies and vendor associations who can connect us to the wider distributor community. Local hardware and fabrication vendors would support prototyping, and faculty mentors would guide the technical design and testing process.

The situation#

India has one of the largest print media markets in the world, with over 330 million daily newspaper readers. Supporting this ecosystem is a vast network of more than 500,000 newspaper distributors, most of whom operate at the grassroots level using bicycles or scooters to deliver papers during early morning hours, typically between 4 AM and 6 AM. These distributors form the last-mile backbone of print media delivery in India.

What is going wrong#

Their work is severely disrupted during the monsoon season, which affects large parts of the country for nearly five to six months every year. Sudden and unpredictable early morning rainfall causes newspapers to become wet and unreadable before they reach the customer. Since distributors carry bundles of 50 to 80 papers at a time with minimal protective covering, even a brief rain shower can damage an entire batch, resulting in direct financial loss for the distributor.

Why it is not fixed yet#

This problem disproportionately affects economically vulnerable workers who depend entirely on daily delivery completion for their livelihood. There exists no affordable, scalable, or technology-driven solution designed specifically for this segment of workers.
